German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp Karrenbauer said she will continue to push for armed drones in the military. Earlier this week, lawmakers insisted that French and German European drones temporarily lose their weapons and cannot follow the bloodthirsty path of the United States' indiscriminate bombing. Members of Congress wrote that on April 14th, the parliamentary budget committee allowed the plan to issue two warnings: the Department of Defense has no authority to purchase ammunition for unmanned aerial vehicles, nor can it conduct "tactical weapon training" for system operators. Previously, the primary partner of the coalition government formed with the Christian Democratic Union of Germany, the Social Democrats, stated that they are fully opposed to weaponizationUAV. The center left political party believes that although Kramp Karrenbauer's ministry launched a public movement last year, moral considerations have not been fully discussed.

On April 16th, the Minister of Defense wrote on Twitter thanking lawmakers for allowing the European drone project to continue, which is a key stepping stone for the Franco German alliance aimed at enhancing the EU's defense capabilities in the coming years. At the same time, she emphasized that she will continue to promote the use of weaponized drones to protect German troops stationed in the Federal Armed Forces.

This debate has dragged on here for several years, largely due to the United StatesUAVWe carried out indiscriminate strikes against terrorists in Afghanistan and Iraq. The German Federal Defense Forces argue that targeted killing will never be the mission of German drones, stating that the firing of these weapons is only for the defense of ground forces. Legislators have also put forward new reporting requirements for the European drone project led by Airbus Defense and Aerospace. Starting from January 2021, officials from the Ministry of National Defense must report on cost development to the parliament twice a year. In addition, lawmakers hope to include data on work sharing packages executed in Germany in these reports, as agreed upon in the final contract. The legislators wrote that cross referencing the progress of European drones with other defense cooperation projects is only allowed with parliamentary approval.
